While no single food or drink can magically ward off every germ, recent pediatric research has pointed to one simple beverage that may help reduce the number of sick days children take. The best part? It's not a fancy supplement or a pricey juice—it's a drink most families already have in the fridge.
Researchers have found that children who regularly drink plain, pasteurized cow's milk tend to have fewer respiratory infections and gastrointestinal illnesses compared to those who consume plant-based milks or skip milk altogether. The findings, published in a leading pediatric journal, suggest that the unique nutritional profile of cow's milk—particularly its protein, vitamin D, and calcium content—supports a child's developing immune system in ways that alternative milks often cannot replicate.
Why milk might make a difference
The immune system in early childhood is still learning to recognize and fight pathogens. Milk provides a package of nutrients that work together to strengthen mucosal barriers in the respiratory and digestive tracts. These barriers are the body's first line of defense against viruses and bacteria. Vitamin D, which is added to most commercial cow's milk in the United States, plays a particularly important role in immune regulation. Children with adequate vitamin D levels tend to mount a more effective response to infections.

For families who avoid dairy for ethical or medical reasons, fortified soy milk came closest to matching cow's milk's nutritional profile in the study. Almond and oat milks typically had less protein, and rice milk had very little. Parents should check labels to ensure the alternative milk provides at least 8 grams of protein per cup and is fortified with vitamin D and calcium.
What about children who don't like milk?
Some children simply refuse to drink milk. In these cases, you can still get similar nutrients from yogurt, cheese, or fortified foods. The study's authors note that the key appears to be the combination of protein, vitamin D, and calcium—not necessarily the liquid form. A child who eats yogurt for breakfast and cheese sticks for snacks may still see a benefit.
If dairy is completely off the table, talk to your pediatrician about supplementing vitamin D, as deficiency is common among children who avoid both milk and sun exposure.
The bottom line from this research: a glass of plain milk with meals is a low-cost, low-risk habit that may help your child spend more days in the classroom and fewer days on the couch. It is not a miracle drink, but for many families, it is the one simple change that could make a real difference over the course of a school year.
